Odzala-Kokoua is one of Africa’s oldest national parks and a biological hotspot within the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest. Its landscape combines lowland rainforest, swamp forest, dry wooded savannah, and more than 100 natural forest clearings that influence how wildlife feeds and moves across the park.

These clearings, known locally as bais, are marshy, mineral-rich oases in the forest. Forest elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, gorillas, and birds visit them to drink, eat vegetation, and obtain minerals and salts. They offer some of the best opportunities to observe forest wildlife in an otherwise dense landscape.

Odzala is especially important for its populations of critically endangered western lowland gorillas and elusive African forest elephants. UNESCO describes the wider protected area as supporting the largest known western lowland gorilla population and one of the Republic of Congo’s two largest forest-elephant populations.

Wild adventures await

The park’s defining experience is guided trekking to view habituated western lowland gorilla groups in their rainforest habitat. These encounters are managed through guided visits designed to reduce disturbance while enabling visitors to understand the species and the forest ecosystem it depends on.

Why Odzala matters

Odzala-Kokoua is more than a safari destination. It safeguards a globally significant rainforest ecosystem that provides water, food, shelter, and other benefits to people across the Congo Basin. The basin spans more than two million square kilometres, accounts for around 18% of Earth’s remaining rainforest, and supports more than 75 million people.

African Parks began managing Odzala-Kokoua in partnership with the Republic of Congo in 2010 under a 25-year agreement. In 2020, the partnership was reaffirmed and expanded to include the 35 km² Lossi Gorilla Sanctuary, strengthening wildlife corridors and the area’s long-term management framework.

Community involvement is a core part of that model. Local governance groups called Associations de Surveillance et de Développement Durable (ASDDs) support engagement on education, healthcare, employment, human rights, and wildlife law. Livelihood initiatives and the Ecoteam programme also connect community members with conservation, tourism, research, and monitoring work.
