The Primates of Uganda: A Rich Wildlife Experience

Uganda is best known for mountain gorillas, but it is also one of East Africa’s richest primate destinations. From chimpanzees and golden monkeys to colobus monkeys, baboons, and mangabeys, the country offers some of the best primate viewing opportunities on the continent.

Mountain gorillas

Uganda’s mountain gorillas are found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi holds about half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, making it one of the most important gorilla trekking destinations in the world.

These gentle giants live in highland forests and feed mainly on vegetation such as bamboo, forest plants, fruits, and other plant matter. Gorilla trekking is one of Uganda’s most unforgettable wildlife experiences.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are among Uganda’s most famous primates and are especially associated with Kibale National Park and Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park. They are intelligent, social, and closely related to humans.

Chimpanzee tracking usually takes a few hours and gives visitors the chance to observe their behavior, communication, and movement through the forest canopy. Chimpanzees are also found in Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park.

Golden monkeys

Golden monkeys are rare and beautiful primates found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. They are recognized by their golden-orange body color and lively movement in bamboo forests.

These monkeys are endangered and make an excellent addition to a primate-focused safari in southwestern Uganda.

Other monkey species

Uganda is also home to several other monkey species, including:

• Olive baboons, found in savannah and forest areas across many parks.

• Black-and-white colobus monkeys, common in many forests.

• Blue monkeys, which live in several national parks and forested areas.

• Grey-cheeked mangabeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys, both associated with forest habitats.

Best time to visit

Uganda is a year-round primate destination, but the dry seasons are generally the best times for trekking and travel. These usually fall between December and February, and from June to mid-September.
